-
- I've been using 32-bit applications for some time. 32-bit Netscape.
- 32-bit Adobe Photoshop. 32-bit Word.
-
- I am sorry to report that /all/ the 32-bit applications I've seen are more
- bloated and less stable than their 16-bit counterparts. 32-bit Word was
- a particular disappointment; its echo couldn't even keep up with my typing,
- which I thought was a problem long gone since my PDP-10 days. :-(
-
- 32-bit Visual Basic programs are significantly slower than their 16-bit
- counterparts using the previous VB version.
-
- What actually seems to be happening is that 32-bit is slightly faster than
- 16-bit assuming the same code base. But since the programs are bloating
- like crazy, the older code bases are actually faster than the new 32-bit
- versions.
-
- Windows95 does have an enormously improved user interface over Windows 3.1,
- and on that basis I can give a tepid endorsement for the upgrade. But if you
- think your problems will be gone with 32-bit applications, you're sadly
- mistaken. :-(
-
- I'm going to be putting NT on an experimental system of mine; we'll see if it's
- better. That should be interesting, since it has a surprisingly good reputation
- for a Microsoft product.
